Ken Kagami

Snoope Special Edition

Ken Kagami (perhaps best known for Deerhoof cover art) chimes in with some thoughts on Snoopy. Not sure how I would explain this one to the kids…

This is one of those deals where the technical execution is excellent and aesthetically everything is great but I’m not neccesarily into the concept (or at least as I understand it). Subtle it aint. Hats off all the same.

Tracey Maurice & Luke Best

By Ayumi from Apak

Nicholas Burrows and Luke Ramsey

I posted about Tracey Maurice’s collaboartion w/ the uber talented luke ramsey awhile back. A few of their works are now available for sale (quite reasonably) along with other very nicely priced work over at Islands Fold.

Universal Everything

Universal Everything is an agency founded by Designer’s Republic alum Matt Pyke and specializing in digital motion work. There’s some interesting stuff in their portfolio but also worth checking out is a blog they maintain called “Advanced Beauty” which seems to focus on generative art if you are into that sort of thing.

Of course what kind of sounds come out of these things could make or break it but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Guatemalan Brand Appropriations

Few things are as amusing as seeing brand names, logos and all the associations that come with them lifted wholesale, removed of most of their original context and crudely reproduced. Unless you are an IP lawyer or Kate Spade it’s hard not to look at these appropriations as a wonderful kind of folk art. I only wish there were more of these.

“Fake brands” have been making their way around the web for awhile now (“fake chinese brands“, more fake chinese brands, more examples and yet more)… Someone should really compile a proper book of these.

Many of these appropriations are bizarre and amusing, like the notion of a “shanel battery” below… but what could ever compete with the IBM church above? One can’t help but wonder “what idea was the person creating it trying to convey?”*

Above photos found at Pobre Mi Gordo (Via Colectiva)

* and if IBM actually stands for something practical like Iglesia Bolivar Martinez or whatever I don’t wanna hear about it.

Cris Bruch (and others @ Lawrimore)

So… in addition to writing good press copy the people over at Lawrimore also do a decent job curating:

Ok… first thing first. Anybody running a gallery could learn a thing or two from whoever is doing the publicity over at Lawrimore Project in Seattle which describes Issac Layman’s upcoming photography exhibit thusly:

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EXHIBITIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE LAST 500 YEARS EVEN THOUGH PHOTOGRAPHY HAS ONLY BEEN AROUND FOR 180

So anyways, some of the work here is a bit more clinical than I tend to like my photography but there is some nice composition going on here and for people who care about technical sleight of hand and various forms of trickery (I don’t) this is worth stopping by and perusing. I think this exhibit will perhaps win this young man some acclaim but probably not too many roomates.

Definite bonus points for the site specific photograph that looks like a mirror.

Chris Ballantyne

untitled neighborhood tight knit

I first saw Chris Ballantyne’s work over at the Park Life site awhile ago… He has a show coming up in a month or so over at hosfelt gallery which I definitely plan on checking out. Speaking of which… I only just recently found out about todd hosfelt’s blog which is well worth adding to your reader. Always great to see another gallerist spieling a bit and pointing out various finds.  Aside from Winkleman who else is doing this?

“Pictures of TV” is pretty much just shooting fish in a barrel… and its a concept that’s been done to death in various guises over the years. All the same it’s kind of a sad summation of popular culture. You don’t want to rubber neck past the scene of the accident but you can’t help looking.
