Gary Trinh

The ever reliable ANP Quarterly had a really great series from Gary Trinh in the last issue entitled “Giant Bonsais”.  I was quite taken by it.

Update: Jeff way down in the comments submits the following which he snapped a few years ago… Nice!

Can’t make up my mind whether I like  this or not… A bit reminiscent of Hilary Pecis I think. Link (via Lumper)

Graffiti Stag

barca-scot

When I saw that David Graham Arizona piece below, for no good reason at all it reminded me of the graffiti stag above… I guess both play with 2D surfaces in ways I like. In any case, many of you are probably already familiar with her work but in the event you arent, Suzy Q and her Owls live here.

Sookang Kim / Marley White

Digging the series of various “bojagi’s” by Sookang Kim.  Like David Graham, this was found at gallery 339 in Philadelphia who have a really nice selection of artists. Never heard of ‘em before but I think they are great. Almost like a yossi milo in cheesesteak land. Link

Also like these snaps below by Marley White. I apologize in advance for bequeathing the internet yet another cat picture.

Andrew Jeffrey Wright

bart vs black bart on jeweled skull

At the book fair I picked up a great, great book chronicling the  dazzle dogs show from a few years back. I don’t have a “favorite artist” per se, but among contemporary artists I think I like Clare Rojas as much as anyone else I can think of… While flipping through the book I was pleased to find the above image that many of you might have seen before by Andrew Jeffrey Wright (who was in the same show along with Erin Rosenthal). I can’t convey quite why it works for me… but it just does. It’s a great image. Link

Julien Vallee

This immediately reminded me of some sort of chance meeting between Jen Stark + this design by UPSO (not that the provenance of the piece has a scrap to do with either of course). Link (via Heather is Watching)

Nice things over at Phillips

NY Art Book Fair

If you are in nyc this weekend, don’t miss it. It’s free. And it’s really good! Link

Martin Ramirez (again)

Untitled (Galleon on Water)

Looks like the American Folk Art Museum has gotten their mitts on 120 previously unknown drawings by Martin Ramirez, which is significant as there were only 300 known works before this find. I foolishly missed the retrospective they had for him a few years ago but was finally able to see some of his stuff close up at the (regrettably named) outsider art fair this past year. It runs through April 12th so I have plenty of time to catch this one. Can’t say the work looks as compelling as some of the other things I’ve seen by him but I’ll definitely check it out.

Olaf Breuning

Smokebomb (2008)

Currently @ metro pictures…. his photo page is always worth a gander. It’s mostly silly but occasionally inspiring.

I like this shovel

found here. I suppose you’d need the right room for it.

Dustin Shum

There’s a ton of stuff referenced in the post below but Hong Kong based Dustin Shum’s work deserves special mention, especially his amazing “it isnae disney!” series (which  is available as a hard cover book which I will most definitely be ordering). Link – Hats off to Conscientious for the tip off.

Big bonus points for naming his blog fotopiggie.

Landscapes for the Aughts

Anyone who has spent any amount of time here knows my fondness for contemporary landscapes. I’m coming back off of a long break and am really amazed at the sheer volume of amazing work along these lines. Some of these images merely document an altered landscape while others employ somewhat overzealous photoshoping to achieve vaguely related results. The more contemporary landscapes I look at over the years, the more I also recognize the genius of James Turrell’s work. I would love to put together a book documenting this somewhat aesthetically disparate yet thematically similar work one day. In the meantime…

Jacob Dahlgren

I, the world, things, life

Many of you might already be familiar with Jacob Dahlgren’s (perhaps Belinda Carlisle inspired) “Heaven is a Place on Earth” in which he carpeted a floor with red, white and blue scales. For those interested, I remember seeing the individual scales used in the piece for sale at the Chelsea art Museum for roughly $50 a pop.

In any case, I’m very much liking this target piece which was installed at the Venice Biennale.

Hiatus… Back soon.

Sorry for the lack of posts the last few weeks. My laptop died and I’ve also been super busy. Will start posting again this week.

Peter Nidzgorski

My favorite of all the “keep calm” knock offs (hopefully taken in good humor). For the record, I’m a big time anglophile. Don’t hate on me limeys…  This septic loves HP sauce as much as any of you.

Mi Ami and a New Bon Iver track

Apropos of nothing, the new Bon Iver track is not bad in a boring rock song kinda of way. Reminiscent of midlake a bit.

Mi Ami out of San Francisco is worth checking out…
