Chair Porn!
Nina Saunder’s work revolves around the “subversion of the every day object”, with upholstered chairs being her most common muse. People tend to think of sitting in a comfortable chair as a very relaxing and almost nurturing experience and she hopes that by altering them she will be able to create a sense of unease for the viewer. She claims that her various protrusions
“could contain hidden things, growing and bursting… as if something has grown out of all proportion and isn’t quite right…It has some terrible, destructive element to it that is contained, on the edge…I’ve spent a lot of time wondering if I could make fear visible, what would it look like?”
The internet sadly yields very poor photos of most of her work (especially of the giant ball of upholstery entitled “Pure Thought IV” seen here.) The enduring allure of chair art continues…
