I’ve posted about Tex Jernigan’s work before on here and he recently updated his site with a few photos of a new project he’s undertaking documenting various flags via sculpture and photography. Above are a few photos from his series on Japan and there are plans for a project with the Californian flag sometime soon. Before doing the flags, Jernigan’s most striking work involved creating giant steel pole structures in public spaces and photographing people passing by and interacting with his work.

Jernigan’s work is absolutely fantastic in that its full of great ideas about personal and public space, is always interesting as far as pure aesthetics go and most importantly has a real populist streak missing from so much contemporary art. The above steel pole photos were taken in Nebraska and its really refreshing to see regular people who usually would never set foot in a pretentious gallery space in a big city not only take in the art but truly enjoy the experience.

Jernigan’s work is a rare example of well executed public art and he is easily one of my favorite artists working today.

You can see his Picasa web galleries here, his main website here and whole bunch of great photos on flickr right here.
